In 2009 the AT&T Center for Learning and Technology began a limited deployment of the Echo360 lecture capture system on Trinity's campus.
Lecture capture systems allow us to systematically record and archive class lectures. Lecture capture is more than recording a talking head, lecture capture systems allow us to record class video, computer presentations, and class discussions. These recordings can be combined to create rich web presentations, MP3 recordings, or video podcasts.
- What rooms are equipped with lecture capture systems?
Currently, Chapman Auditorium is the only room with a full time installed capture system. There is an additional mobile unit that can be used on request.
- Do I have to participate or is this voluntary?
The use of the lecture capture system is always voluntary. All scheduled courses are loaded by default into the system but all instructors are notified before the recordings begin as to whether they want to participate.
- Do I have to be trained on how to use this system?
Not at all! The system works completely transparently and independently of the instructor. All that you simply do is walk in and teach your class like you would any other and about an hour after your class is finished you will receive an email with links to the different formats available for distribution.
- Do I have to share every recording with the students?
At this time only the instructor receives notification of the recordings. It is up to their discretion as to whether they share these recordings or simply reserve them.
- Who can watch my recordings?
At this time only those with access to the link provided in the email. In the future more access options will be provided.
- What is needed to watch a recording?
The Echo360 lecture capture system uses industry standard formats like Flash, JPEG, h.264/MP4, and MP3. A computer with any modern up-to-date web browser, Flash, and a podcast viewer like iTunes will be able to take full advantage of our system.
- Does this system work with TLEARN?
Any of the links may be used in TLEARN. We are currently working to povide more automated abilities to post to TLEARN.
- How do I reserve the use of the mobile cart? Are there any restrictions?
The mobile unit requires a camera operator most of the time and there is an associate cost based on length of recording. The room must also have access to an audio and video feed from the room and computer. Most university classrooms are ready with advanced warning. We request at least 24hour notice to make appropriate arrangements. You can request the use of the Lecture Capture system using the electronic equipment request form.
- Will my students stop coming to class if I make these recordings available?
Our experience and the findings of other institutions and studies show that typical classroom attendance is not affected by the use of lecture capture systems. As with introduction of any new technology it is up to the instructor to make the class an engaging experience where a recording will merely supplement the expereince rather than replace it.
- Can captures be edited?
We do have a limited ability to edit and replublish lectures. At this time this is limited to basic cuts to remove dead space or mistakes. We do not have the ability to replace the video or add content after the lecture has been given.
