Frequently Asked Questions
- What is TrinAlert?
TrinAlert is Trinity University's emergency text message system. TrinAlert will be used to rapidly and directly notify students, faculty and staff of critical campus emergencies.
- Who can sign up for TrinAlert?
TrinAlert is designed for students, faculty and staff who will be affected directly by an emergency on the university campus. As such, current students, faculty and staff are eligible to sign up and receive alert messages.
- Why should I sign up for TrinAlert?
- Text messaging is more reliable in emergency situations when communication systems reach high capacity.
- Text messages may get through when phone calls won't.
- You will receive alert messages anywhere, even when you do not have access to a computer.
- How much does TrinAlert cost?
There is no charge to users for signing up for TrinAlert. However, standard text messaging rates and plans of your wireless carrier apply to messages received from Trinity University through the TrinAlert system. Registration with TrinAlert constitutes your acceptance of responsibility for any charges you may incur from your wireless carrier as a result. TrinAlert text messages will be sent only in the event of an emergency or urgent situation involving potential threat to safety and occasionally, for system tests.
- Will my cell phone number be kept confidential?
Yes. TrinAlert cell phone numbers are not shared or sold to any other systems or services.
- What do I need to sign up for TrinAlert?
All you need is a cell phone with text messaging capabilities enabled.
Please Note: All landlines, most Tracfones and some pay-as-you-go phones will not register on the system. This is a limitation of the phone providers.
- How do I sign up for TrinAlert?
To register, you need to enter your cell phone number into the "TrinALERT Emergency System" page within TigerPAWS. This is found under the Registration menu for students, Faculty Profile menu for faculty, and the Employee Profile menu for staff. There is no other action required once you have submitted your number.
- How many TrinAlert text messages will I receive?
Text messages will be sent only to alert you to emergency situations in which there is an imminent threat to public safety. Occasionally, the university may also test the system by sending an announced test message. The exact number is difficult to predict, but there should be very few. You will receive messages within seconds of their transmission. If your cell phone is turned off when a text message is sent, you will receive it after you turn your cell phone on, but only if you do so within seven days from the original transmission.
- How can I opt-out of TrinAlert?
You can opt-out (discontinue) at any time just as quickly and easily as you signed up. Login to TigerPAWS and go to the "TrinALERT Emergency System" page. Check the box to confirm you want to "opt out" and click on the "Submit" button.
- What will a TrinAlert message tell me?
In the event of an emergency, a short text message will state the type of threat and indicate suggested action. For instance, for the presence of a gunman on campus: “GUNMAN AT LARGE NEAR (LOCATION). SHELTER IN PLACE.” Because the messages must be brief, you may also be directed to go to the main university web site (www.trinity.edu) for more information.
