The Common Curriculum enables students at Trinity University to understand the varied domains of human knowledge and experience. The Common Curriculum also guides students in acquiring the skills necessary for active, critical, and creative participation in the academic life of the University. Paramount among these skills are the abilities to think creatively and critically, and to express such thinking effectively both orally and in writing.

The Common Curriculum consists of the following parts:

First-Year Seminar
A course with variable themes, taught by faculty from all disciplines of the University. Comprised of a maximum of 15 first year students, each seminar inducts students into an intellectual discussion of substantive issues and enhances their speaking, writing, and bibliographic skills.

Writing Workshop
A class focused on developing rhetorical skills in first year students, and designed to refine and strengthen skills in critical reading, analysis, judgment, and written composition.

Foreign Language, Information Technology, and Mathematics Skills
Language and math requirements may be met through high school course work. Information technology proficiency may be proved by passing an exam during orientation or completing a course in the first three semesters at Trinity.

Fitness Education
Students should possess basic knowledge, understanding, or skills that will help them to make good decisions relating to health throughout life. This requirement may be satisfied by completing any approved course.

Understanding Cultural Heritage (9 hours; 3 courses)

  • Cultural Traditions Indigenous to Africa, Asia, the Americas, Australia, and Oceania. (at least 3 hours; 1 course)
  • Greco-Roman and Judeo-Christian Traditions through Early Modern Period (at least 3 hours; 1 course)

Understanding the Arts & and Literature (9 hours; 3 courses)

  • Visual Arts, Music, Performance, and Aesthetic Production (at least 3 hours; 1 course)
  • Literary Studies (at least 3 hours; 1 course)

Understanding Human Social Interaction (9 hours; 3 courses)

  • Approaches to the Social Sciences (6 hours; 2 courses) 
  • Social Issues and Social Values (3 hours; 1 course)

Understanding Quantitative Reasoning (3 hours; 1 course)

Understanding Natural Science & Technology (6 hours)

  • Using Scientific Methods (at least 1 course)
  • Natural Science (at least 3 hours; 1 course)
