The American intercultural studies minor, requiring 18 semester hours, is designed to help students develop the skills and knowledge necessary for intercultural understanding and cooperation in today's diverse society. In addition, the program seeks to enhance positive associations with and among the people of various intercultural communities.
While courses in the minor recognize that certain historical events and experiences involving race and/or ethnicity in America continue to have a major impact upon the nature and development of intercultural relations, the curriculum examines events, conditions, circumstances, major figures and movements that are significant to understanding a particular minority group's experience and viewpoint in America. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to read an analyze contexts that influence or impact intercultural understanding and intercultural relationships.
Faculty from across disciplines, including business administration, modern languages and literatures, speech and drama, and sociology and anthropology have come together to teach courses in this interdisciplinary program.
