French Revolution European Enlightenment French Colonialism History of Paris Early Modern and Modern Europe |
Ken Loiselle specializes in the history of eighteenth-century France and its colonies, with a particular emphasis on Freemasonry, one of the key institutions of the Enlightenment. His first book, Brotherly Love: Freemasonry and the Transformation of Male Friendship in Eighteenth-Century France, traces how men within the fraternity formed affectionate and trusting friendships through performing rituals, writing letters, delivering speeches, and providing one another with great emotional and material support. He has co-edited a volume on the history of Freemasonry from the eighteenth century to the present, and is currently at work on a second book to be co-authored with Pierre-Yves Beaurepaire that examines the typical masonic itinerary in the French Enlightenment, both in the metropolitan and colonial context.
My research and teaching focus on the relationship between the Enlightenment and the political revolutions that unfolded during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the history of friendship and private life, and French colonialism in the Americas.
