First-Year Seminars are a series of classes that help prepare first-year students in areas such as critical thinking, oral and written communication, and bibliographic formats. Students who enroll in MAS-related seminars gain an expanded view of MAS cultures early on in their collegiate careers.


MAS First-Year Seminars include:

Migratory Cultures in the Americas 
This First-Year Seminar approaches the issue of population movements in the Americas through cinema, art, and literature. Read the full syllabus here

Embracing San Antonio: Cultura y Comunidad
This bilingual seminar will explore the history, culture, and present-day reality of San Antonio’s Latino majority population. Special attention is paid to expressions of Mexican and Mexican American culture in the city and historical and contemporary struggles to improve the quality of life of the city’s residents. Mexican American Popular Culture
This course examines Mexican American popular culture from the 1900s to 2006 by analyzing music, newspapers, film, art, literature, television programs, and other cultural productions in order to learn about Mexican American culture. Read the full syllabus here.
