IMAP E-Mail Client Settings

Since there are so many different IMAP e-mail clients, it is impossible to give details on how to set up each one. Even the terminology may vary between packages. Exactly how your IMAP e-mail client must be setup should be described in the documentation or help facility that came with the package. Below are some basic settings and the more common terms associated with them you may be required to provide.

Note: IMAP is a preferable mail protocol to POP because it offers two-way communication between your web T-mail and your email client(s). This means when you log in to T-mail using a web browser, actions you perform on email clients and mobile devices (ex: putting mail in a 'work' folder) will instantly and automatically appear in Gmail (ex: it will already have a 'work' label on that email the next time you sign in).

  • IMAP Host or IMAP Server Name - Use m.google.com
  • Incoming mail server - Use imap.gmail.com with all letters in lower case.
  • SMTP Server - Use smtp.gmail.com
  • Username, User Name, or Account - Some e-mail clients will request both your name and your account. Usually the name is your normal name (such as George Washington). The username or account is your Trinity email address using your username (for example: gwashing@trinity.edu).
  • Password - This is your T-mail password.
  • Domain - This can be left blank.
  • Incoming mail server - encryption is SSL, port is 993
  • Outgoing mail server - encryption is TLS, port is 587
