Homeless While in College

Author to visit Trinity University to share stories of living 'Under the Overpass'

By Brianna Tammaro '13

SAN ANTONIO - , Christian author of  Under the Overpass: A Journey of Faith on the Streets of America, will speak Thursday, Feb. 28, about his experiences living homeless during college. The presentation, which is free and open to the public, will be at 7 p.m. in Trinity University's Parker Chapel Meditation Room with a reception and book signing to follow.

Mike Yankoski

Several years ago, Yankoski left school with a friend to live as homeless men on the streets of six different U.S. cities for five months. In an effort to better understand the plight of the American homeless, the friends observed how everyday Christians interacted with this group of society and chronicled their experiences.

Yankoski has written several other books, including My 30 Days Under the Overpass: Not Your Ordinary Devotional, and Zealous Love: A Practical Guide to Social Justice. Co-written with his wife in 2010, Zealous Love addresses eight areas of global need from a Christian perspective.

Originally from Parker, Colo., Yankoski currently lives in Vancouver, British Columbia. He earned a master's of Christian Studies from Regent College in 2012. Yankoski has served on the board of directors for World Vision US and the board of advisers for Kilns College.

Under the Overpass is required reading for the first-year seminar focused on homelessness, in which H.O.P.E. Hall first-years and other students are enrolled.

The presentation is sponsored by residents of H.O.P.E. Hall, the living and learning community on the Trinity campus that is focused on homelessness.
