By Andrew Soares '12

SAN ANTONIO - Barbara Ras, acclaimed poet and Trinity University Press director, has received the Award for Literary Excellence by Gemini Ink at its annual Inkstravaganza gala.

"The Award for Literary Excellence is bestowed on writers who have achieved national recognition and represent the power and vitality of the literary arts and its importance to our community," said Sheila Black, artistic director and executive at Gemini Ink.

Ras' work has been featured in national publications such as the New Yorker, two poetry anthologies by Garrison Keillor, and the Caroline Kennedy edited anthology She Walks in Beauty. Ras has received praise for her debut poetry volume, Bite Every Sorrow, for which she earned the Walt Whitman Award, the Kate Tufts Discovery Award, and the title of Georgia Poet of the Year for 2009. She has also received fellowships from the Artist Foundation of San Antonio, and the Guggenheim and Rockefeller foundations.

Her two subsequent books of poems are One Hidden Stuff and The Last Skin, winner of the Texas Institute of Letters Prize for Poetry. Ras is also the editor of a collection of short fiction in translation, Costa Rica: A Traveler's Literary Companion.

In addition to Ras, the literary excellence award has previously been presented to Lee Robinson, Jerry Winakur, Naomi Shihab Nye, David Liss, Bryce Milligan, and the late Sterling Houston.
