Share the Wealth

Trinity University volunteer group partners with 'Urban Studs' to benefit charities

SAN ANTONIO - "Going green" isn't just a term for staying environmentally friendly anymore. Several Trinity University students took the phrase to heart by collecting more than $10,000 and recycling it to go toward purchasing food for several charities in San Antonio.

Typically, students majoring in Urban Studies lead the project to garner awareness for recycling the money that is not used from pre-paid meal plans. This year the food bank ministry of Trinity University Voluntary Action Committee (TUVAC), one of several volunteer organizations on campus, joined the effort headed by sophomore Katie Ogawa. Also involved in the campaign were sophomore Urban Studies majors, Lucas Belury and Michelle Padley, also known as "Urban Studs."

The money left over from students' meal plans was used to buy food in bulk for Inner City Development, Catholic Worker House, San Antonio Food Bank, and Corazon Ministries. The packages were delivered in May during students' finals and as they were packing up to leave the campus for summer.

As the numbers rolled in, the tally surpassed over $10,000, just over the goal set for the project. The event, officially titled Aramark Share the Wealth, did just that and is officially considered a success.
