Second Trinity University Residence Hall Earns LEED Gold Designation

SAN ANTONIO - Calvert Residence Hall, home to first-year students entering Trinity University, has been designated a LEED Gold building, the second dorm at Trinity to earn the environmental distinction.

The designation was awarded by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), which granted the same designation to the Miller Residence Hall project in 2009.

According to John W. Greene, Trinity's director of Campus Planning and Sustainability, the Calvert application was judged under newer, more stringent requirements.

"Trinity is committed to leading by example," Greene said. "Providing sustainable living areas for students is only one example of the many green practices we support."

In addition to Miller and Calvert residence halls, phase 2 of Trinity's new Center for the Sciences and Innovation is a registered LEED project, Greene said. Featuring a mid-century design, much of the renovation work at Calvert was intended not only to update the rooms, but also to enhance safety and environmentally-friendly construction. Part of a traditional first-year student quad, Calvert features public walkways with room doors that open directly to the exterior.

Playing a vital role in Calvert's sustainable design were Marmon Mok Architects, Cleary/Zimmerman Engineering, and Browning Construction Co.

Of the 16 member institutions of the Associated Colleges of the South, only Furman has two or more projects with LEED Gold. Furman has three Gold projects.
