Award-winning Playwright to Speak at Trinity University
Will Kern to present "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men"
SAN ANTONIO - Will Kern, playwright, screenwriter, and travel writer, will explain the value of mentorship in an artist's development during his presentation "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men," at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, in the Chapman Center Great Hall. He will also discuss his mentors and influences, as well as do readings from his plays. His talk will be followed by a question-and-answer session and a reception. The event is free and open to the public.
Kern's play Hellcab, originally produced by Famous Door Theater Company, ran in Chicago for more than nine years, making it one of the city's longest running shows. The play won a Fringe First at the Edinburgh Festival in 1997 and an LA Weekly Theater Award for Best Comedy Writing in 1996. It was also adopted for the screen in 1998. Other theater credits include Skeleton (1994), Mothers and Tigers (2008), and Kid Sister (2010), and the translation of the Korean plays The Clowns and While You Were Sleeping. A resident of Seoul, South Korea, Kern has been published in newspapers and magazines worldwide, including American Foreign Service Journal, Vietnam magazine, Inside Kung Fu, and Time Out. He is a regular contributor to Silver Kris, the in-flight magazine for Singapore Airlines. In 2002, his story Babysitting: My Day as a Booster Chair won a Lowell Thomas Award from the American Society of Travel Writers; it has been published in several periodicals in five countries.
The Trinity Theatre program is hosting Kern's visit to campus. For more information, contact Trinity's Office of University Communications at 210-999-8441.
